Sub: Indian Women's Press Corps expresses concern over CBI raid on journalist's house

The Indian Women's Press Corps expresses its deep concern over the raid conducted by the apex investigating body of the country, the CBI, into the home and office of a Mumbai based journalist Ms TeestaSetalvad. There is a growing perception that Ms Setalvad and her organisation are being targeted for entirely different reasons. While law and order agencies are expected to function in an impartial manner, the government of the day is required to be fair and neutral to all citizens of the country. The IWPC therefore registers its strong protest against witch-hunting of any journalist.

As an organisation representing women journalists, the IWPC feels that the increasing spate of attacks on journalists in covert and overt forms everywhere will not abate unless the law makers and law enforcers conduct themselves in an impartial and transparent manner. Singling out certain organisations and individuals, however dissenting their views might be, does not augur well for Indian democracy, nor for Indian journalism.
