Sub: Indian Women's Press Corps condemns attack on UP journalists and trolling of a woman journalist on the social media

The Indian Women's Press Corps, expresses shock at the brazen murder of Jagendra Singh in Shahjanpur and the murderous assault on Deepak Mishra, a Kanpur based journalist. The IWPC notes with concern that journalists often are victims of violent attacks due to the nature of their work that involves taking risks and taking on people in positions of authority.

It demands while responsible journalism should be the unwritten norm, those accused in the violent attack on both journalists be immediately apprehended and the state government conduct an impartial inquiry in the matter. If there is any threat perception to the families of the victims, given the nature of those allegedly involved, the state police should provide them with adequate security and protection.

The IWPC also notes with deep concern the recent instance of trolling of a woman journalist in the social media. While the journalist took the correct step of filing an FIR, it is appalling that working women in India, whose contribution to the economy and society cannot be underscored enough are subject to demeaning treatment with sophisticated forms of communication being used increasingly as a medium of abuse.
