Subject: IWPC Press Statement on the occasion of National Press Day

Dear Sir/Ma'am,

On the occasion of National Press Day, the Indian Women’s Press Corps wishes to reiterate its commitment to the ideals of a free and fair press. Recognising that the media today faces challenges, both internally as well as externally, the IWPC calls upon the media community to face these challenges as well as uphold the principles behind fair, free and responsible reporting in the interests of social change and social transformation.

Given the sweeping changes in the mass media today, there is an urgent need to democratise the media from within. A fair and free press is possible in an environment where all those in the media have decent working conditions. As a women’s journalist organisation, we would also like the media in particular to be sensitive to gender issues in the context of increasing violence against women in general and the women in the media in particular.
